ABOUT BIOELECTRONIC MEDICINE

Bioelectronic medicine (BEM) is a rapidly advancing field that combines molecular medicine, neuroscience, and biomedical engineering to develop device-based therapies for treating human disease. By targeting the body’s nervous system to treat disease or impairment, BEM therapies aim to selectively activate nerve fibers and neural circuits that control vital physiological functions. The goal is to provide more personalized, precise therapies with fewer side effects than traditional medications and to provide alternative therapies for patients who do not respond to traditional treatments. Key advances in the field have led to the development of neuromodulation therapies that can activate specific neural circuits to control inflammation, regulate organ function, and treat conditions ranging from arthritis to motor impairment and neuropsychiatric disorders. With recent FDA approvals—including vagus nerve stimulation for rheumatoid arthritis as the first neuroimmune modulation device to treat inflammation—and numerous therapies advancing through clinical trials, BEM is poised to transform the treatment of diseases across multiple organ systems.

ABOUT THE BIOLECTRONIC MEDICINE SUMMIT

The Bioelectronic Medicine Summit series, hosted by the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and Northwell Health since 2016, has become the premier international gathering for advancing this emerging field. Prior BEM Summit meetings have taken place in Manhattan, Stockholm, and Garden City (Long Island, NY). This year’s Summit returns to Manhattan and will take place at The Lighthouse, Chelsea Piers.

These meetings bring together leaders from academia, medicine, and industry to discuss cutting-edge developments, foster cross-disciplinary collaborations, and accelerate the translation of bioelectronic therapies from bench to bedside. Each BEM Summit has featured keynote addresses from pioneering researchers, panel discussions addressing key challenges in device development and clinical translation, and presentations of the latest preclinical and clinical findings across a wide range of applications, including brain-computer interfaces and neuromodulation devices, to novel neural recording technologies and neuroimmune therapeutics. The meetings have grown to attract hundreds of attendees from around the world, creating a unique forum where clinicians, material scientists, neuroscientists, molecular biologists, immunologists, biomedical engineers, and industry innovators come together to shape the future of bioelectronic medicine. The Summit series continues to play a vital role in building the multidisciplinary community needed to realize the full potential of this field to improve human health. We hope to welcome you to this growing community at the 7th BEM Summit in New York City.
